135 Jackson St.
1874

This High Victorian Italianate brick residence was constructed by carpenters William E. Crume (1848-1906) and his father-in-law, Andrew Slentz (1825-1892). Mr. Crume lived here until 1889 when he sold the house to Augustus Witchger, whose occupation at that time was listed as "dealer in moist goods" (he ran a saloon).

After Mr. Witchgar's death, the house became the parsonage of the Raper Methodist Church then located at the corner of Fifth and Jackson Streets. The house had suffered fire damage and years of neglect when restoration work was started in the middle 1970's. The room layout may have changed, but the formal feeling conveyed by the marble fireplaces and the beautiful front stairway remains as impressive today as it was in 1874.

The archives section of the OHDS web site will continue to evolve as more information becomes available. The quality and accuracy of the information here is our top priority.
